Hoodoo Peak is located in the Boise Mountains, not far from Idaho City. It stands at the head of Hoodoo Creek, and makes for an easy hike starting at Rabbit Creek Summit. The hike follows a single track motorcycle trail along a ridge to the top. The area is partially forested, but there is enough open terrain to allow good views in all directions at various points along the way. Keep in mind this is a popular area, so you may want to visit on a weekday if hoping for solitude.

I was looking for a good hike close to home for my wife and me. After spotting Hoodoo Peak on the map, and seeing it was less than 90 minutes from our house in south Boise, plans were set. It was a crisp November morning as we began the hike, but soon enough it was time to start peeling off layers. We generally took our time along the trail, with occasional stops to take in the views, inspect mossy trees, check out twisted logs, and other such things.

It only took us about an hour to reach the highpoint, where we stopped to take in the views of nearby Pilot Peak and Sunset Peak to the northeast, as well as Shafer Butte to the southwest. It was a definite highlight to share those views with my better half. We then followed the trail back to the car, continuing our casual pace and enjoying the mountain air.

Hoodoo Peak made for a nice morning in the mountains with my love. Round trip was about 3.5 miles and 600’ elevation gain in about 2 hours. It was a great little hike close to home.
