Snowdon Rock is a small peak on the edge of the Lick Creek Range, just east of Little Payette Lake near McCall. It’s a short hike, but a nice adventure including some bushwhacking and fun scrambling up the granite slabs and ledges that make up the summit block.

We were camping nearby with family. It was going to be a hot day, so my youngest son and I headed out in the morning while it was still mostly cool. I followed Splattski’s directions and parked at the first switchback on Lick Creek Road, just past Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary.

The start of the hike follows a trail along an old roadbed for a couple hundred yards, then we headed uphill, bushwhacking through the brush and then found some fun rocks to scramble up. Snowdon Rock soon came into view, and we descended briefly to the saddle just west of the peak.

The way up wasn’t always obvious, we just took our time pick our way through rocky ledges and mossy slabs. Our route took us up to the summit from the southwesternish direction. On top we enjoyed the views and a granola bar.

For the sake of adventure, we scoped out a different route down to the northwesternish direction. It was fun as well, with more scrambling and route finding. Once back to the saddle, it was just a matter of bushwhacking back down to the trail, then hustling back to the car to avoid mosquitos.

It was a fun morning adventure with my son. Round trip of about 1.5 miles and 600’ gain in under 2 hours.
