With minimal planning, we ended up with a nice hike in the Centennial Mountains

Lookout Point is located toward the southern end of the Centennial Mountains. This is in the northeast corner of Idaho, just south of the Montana border. The summit is home to excellent views, and is reachable via two-track ATV trails from both the east and west. The easiest access is from the west, by driving the FS road up Middle Threemile Creek, to where it ends just south of Lone Pine Pass. Hike or ride from there.

Michael, John, and I were looking for a leg stretcher peak on the way to Montana. After stopping near Dubois to check maps, we chose Lookout Point after reading Rick Baugher's trip report. Once at the end of the road, we hiked a well used ATV trail through pleasant forest terrain.

The summit afforded excellent open views into Montana. Notice the motorcycle tracks.

Here’s John enjoying the summit views to the east after a snack break.

On the way back, we took a cross country shortcut heading west through the forest. The brush was wet from recent rain, so regaining the trail was a welcome sight. The rest of the way back, we dodged occasional motorcycles, and got back to the trailhead just before the clouds opened up.

Map of our route. Round trip was about 9 miles and 1600' of elevation gain. It took us just 3.5 hours. A little on the long side for a leg stretcher, but still nice.
