Mount Jurupa
An Excellent Adventure in the Sawtooths

Mount Jurupa (2,217') - East Jurupa Peak (1,913')

Mount Jurupa is located in southern California, in the city of Fontana. It’s a prominent mountain rising amidst the inland empire, with the most common route starting from the north at Martin Tudor Park. There is a steep and rutted trail leading up the north ridge, with abundant graffiti art along the way. It is also possible to add in a climb of adjacent “East Jurupa Peak” for a two peak outing.

While visiting friends in the area, I got up early for a hike while my family was still sleeping. I decided to start with East Jurupa (Peak 1913'). It was a little eerie walking through the tunnel under Sierra Avenue in the dark, but soon enough I was making my way up the light brush on the northwest slopes, with the lights of Fontana behind me.

Here's a dim view of Mount Jurupa to the west.

I made it to the summit of East Jurupa (Peak 1913') without issue, and enjoyed the views of the city lights in various directions. The trail along the way wasn't easy to follow in the dark, so I was thankful for a gpx route I'd downloaded in advance.

After retracing my route back down to Martin Tudor Park, it was time to head up the rutted trail to Mount Jurupa.

On the way up, I had good views of the sunrise above East Jurupa.

Higher up, there is plenty of graffiti art. Not a wilderness experience, but interesting. Dark side of the moon!

Bob Marley cubism.

Dire Wolf Grateful Dead Head.

Angry Bird, and Hunter S. Thompson in the background.

Looking back on an airplane coming in to the Ontario Airport, with Cucamonga Peak in the background.

The flat summit area was a little anticlimactic, but I took the time to walk around the perimeter to see the views.

Here's a view toward Riverside to the southeast.

Looking down on East Jurupa Peak.

I mostly retraced the same path back down the ridge to Martin Tudor Park, seen here below.

Map of my route, starting with East Jurupa, then Jurupa. Round trip was about 5 miles and 1900' of elevation gain in a leisurely 2 hours of hiking.
