Elevation 8358'
An great day of snowshoeing in the northern Sawtooths

The area around Banner Summit and Cape Horn makes from some pretty good snowshoeing hikes. The terrain is generally mellow, and there are plenty of open meadows and snowy trees. There are even a few mountains within striking distance from the highway. One of those mountains is Peak 8358’, nicknamed “Trap Creek Peak”. The peak is located on the northern edge of the Sawtooth Mountains, just outside the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

We parked at a plowed pullout near Meadow Creek. It was about 5 degrees below zero when we left the highway and started making our way acrosss the flats.

Open meadows gave way to forest, with some burn areas along the way.

We crossed over a few low ridges along the way to the base of our peak.

After a couple miles, it was time to head uphill in earnest.

The snowy trees were pretty and served as good distraction from our huffing and puffing.

Higher up, the trees thinned a bit in places allowing for some views. What a beautiful day!

Here we are nearing the summit.

Views to the north were highlighted by Cabin Creek Peak in the Salmon River Mountains.

Quite the group assembled for this trip. Here we are on the summit. Dave, Brett, Derek, Johnny, Michael, and George.

There were some trees on and around the summit, but we caught a few views of the Sawtooths.

After a lunch break, it was time to head down.

Map of our route. Round trip was just over 9 miles and 2100' of elevation gain in 7 hours.
